India's Defence Chief General Bipin Rawat Killed In Chopper Crash

An Indian army helicopter crashed near Coonoor in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, as a result of which 13 people, including the Indian Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat and his wife, have died.

The Indian Air Force said in a statement on the social media website Twitter that "It is with great regret that it has become clear that General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other people on board the helicopter have died in the incident".

The statement added that Capt. Varun Singh SC, Directing Staff Group at DSSC was also injured and is currently undergoing treatment at Military Hospital Wellington.

"General Bipin Rawat was on his way to address staff course teachers and students at Defense Services Staff College, Wellington (Nilgiri Hills)," the Indian Air Force said.

The statement said that "around noon, the Mi-17 V5 helicopter of the Indian Air Force was carrying 4 crew members and other passengers and the accident occurred near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu".
