Huge setback to Netanyahu in the middle of the Palestine-Israel war

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has received a big shock during the Israel-Hamas war. Israel's highest court has struck down a law passed by Netanyahu's government to weaken the judiciary.

But now the Supreme Court has given a big shock to Netanyahu by invalidating this law. This law had sparked nationwide protests.

The new legislation removed one of the tools available to the Supreme Court to overturn decisions of the government and ministers.

In a statement, the court said eight out of 15 judges had ruled in favor of striking down the law.

The dramatic order could throw Israel back into constitutional and political crisis amid fears of a war in Gaza and a possible war with Lebanon.

A backlash from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right political allies could force former Defense Minister Benny Gantz to quit the emergency coalition government formed after the October 7 attack.

If Gantz, who is part of the opposition National Unity Alliance, leaves the war cabinet, decisions about the war will be in the hands of a radical right-wing government and could have implications for US support for the war in Gaza. .

The legislation struck down by the court was passed last July.

The law limits the Supreme Court's oversight of government actions and policies and eliminates the court's ability to block government decisions and appointments on "reasonableness" grounds.

The law was the first piece of Netanyahu's judicial overhaul legislation, a plan that has destabilized Israel's economy, military and foreign relations.

The court ordered that the law be repealed because it caused serious and unprecedented damage to Israel's democratic character.
